Art in Prison

There are many people in prisons around the world. Therefore, with the aim of rehabilitating, distracting or preparing prisoners to rejoin society, many prisons have development programs for inmates. A common program in several prisons is “arts behind bars”. “Arts behind bars” is not a single project, it is a set of workshops such as needlework in male prisons, arts projects, or collaborative stage shows. One of the objectives is to channel the strong feelings that lead to confinement, violence or danger. All this trapped energy can stimulate the creativity of the prisoners and come out in the form of art as a way of reform or rehabilitation. Another objective is to build critical awareness and confidence by learning and mastering a skill as a liberating experience through knowledge. Some prisons have live music presentations or shows where the prisoners are spectators. Others have a great number of projects of art created with and by prisoners. Some projects are the creation of literary works, paintings, confections and sculptures. An example of art created in prison is the film “Modelo estéreo” where Garo and My Friend, two ex-convicts, show the music that is created in the “La Modelo” prison in Colombia.

 Reading 2
How not to die before you get old
(No copie la lectura)

Chiako is active and healthy. She gets up at 7:00 a.m. every day and goes for brisk walk. Three times a week, she plays gate-ball - a popular national sport- with her friends. There is nothing unusual about this, except that Chiako is 102 years old. She is not alone- there are hundreds of centenarians who lead healthy lives like this in Okinawa. Okinawa is a group of Japanese islands between Japan and Taiwan. Near a beach, there is a large stone with the following proverb engraved on it: “At 70 you are still a child; at 80 you are just a youth; and at 90, if the ancestors invite you into heaven, ask them to wait until you are 100, and then you might considered it.” Okinawans manage to stay slim in old age by eating a low-calorie diet which consists of three quarters plant food and one quarter animal food. They eat seven servings of fruit and vegetables every day and they stop eating when they are 80% full. They also keep physically active the natural way by dancing, doing martial arts, walking, and gardening. In other words, they do the things they enjoy. Okinawans have developed a stress-resistant personality. Nobody is in a hurry, timetables are non-existent, and there is always tomorrow. Hundreds of people, both young and old, go to the beach every day to watch the spectacular sunsets. In Okinawa there is always time to watch the sun set. As well as large extended families, Okinawans have strong networks of friends. When someone is sick and does not come to work, a neighbor will always knock on their door to find out how they are. There`s no magic pill. If you stay in shape, if you have good friends, a healthy diet, and a stress-free lifestyle, you will live longer. It's as simple as that! John and the tree (no copie la lectura)

John wants to build a house next to a forest. In the forest, there are lots of trees, flowers and animals. There is a lake too. John takes his axe and goes to the forest. He talks to a tree. “I need wood to build my house,” he says. So the tree gives John some wood. John’s friends visit him and they like his house. John and his friends go to the forest and cut down more and more and more trees, to build more and more houses. Soon there are not more trees. There aren’t any flowers. There are not any animals. The lake is dirty. The people are sad and thirsty. John goes to the forest.” What happened?” John asks the tree. “You cut down the trees in the forest. Now the animals do not have food to eat or a place to live. The lake is dirty so there aren’t any fishes”, says the tree. “What can I do?” asks John. “Plant trees and clean the lake” says the tree. John and his friends plant trees and they clean the lake. Now the trees are tall and have leaves. There are flowers. The animals are back in the forest. There are fishes in the lake. The forest is cool again. Everyone is happy.
